The brainchild of President and CEO Nancy Rhodes, the company started back in 1989 on Bell Road in Phoenix Arizona in small cramped quarters. The company today is recognized as the leader in the resale of model home furnishings, interior design, staging, furniture appraisals and installations.
Scouting beautiful model homes was a favorite pastime of young, successful stockbroker Nancy Rhodes. Couple her keen financial background with model home furniture and her dream of home ownership. An entrepreneur was born. She broke from tradition and the prestigious Wall Street firm of Merrill Lynch to start FURNITURE AFFAIR in a short 9 months – from idea to grand opening! The premise was simple. She saw the need to help builders move their one-of a kind model home furnishings after the models sold, so she created the opportunity to re-sell the beautiful furniture and accessories to the public. At first, she bought a van and moved most of the furniture herself.
Opening officially on Bell Road in Phoenix where the retail center was 75% vacant, the landlord gave her 6-months free rent and 1200 square feet. The word spread rapidly and she took over 3,500 square feet. At 8,000 square feet, the company sales hit $1,000,000 dollars. More and more builders were added to her list of satisfied vendors and the company kept pace with the enormous growth of the Valley’s new home sales. The model furniture re-sale market was catching fire.
In October 1997 FURNITURE AFFAIR relocated to a 12,000 square foot location. This is when the true essence of the builder relationships grew to more than 25 local and national builder network. The realtors and designers were the natural referral customers – recommending FURNITURE AFFAIR to their own clients as well as buying their own personal furnishings from the store. Nancy Rhodes was a trendsetter and she parlayed the concept into a thriving multi-faceted furnishings business serving customers throughout Arizona.
In 2002, FURNITURE AFFAIR grew to the existing 28,900 square foot facility located at the northwest corner of 7th Street and Coral Gabels in the growing north Valley. Today, the company is a multi-million dollar venture with expansion plans into internet commerce, television, and consigner marketplace.
Grounded in Midwestern values, Nancy Rhodes learned early on the value of hard work and the need for financial security from her grandparents on their family farm. She took to heart the many stories she heard about the depression and working hard until sunset. With a strong will to succeed Ms. Rhodes has worked for the past 15 years to create her own successful furnishings empire in Phoenix, Arizona.
Her first “home” after graduating from Southern Illinois University was a simple garage that she rented for $80 dollars a month. She rose through the job ranks, first in public relations and later to land a position with Merrill Lynch in Phoenix, Arizona. Feeling the freedom of entrepreneurship, Nancy thrived on the market action and enjoyed all of the financial aspects of the business. After the stock market crash of 1987, a trusted friend and client - and later her husband – encouraged her to go into business for herself.
Deciding on just what business to begin was the dilemma. She dreamed of owning a beautiful home one-day and would scout model homes for fun. It finally clicked…she would provide a space for the builders to sell their model home furniture directly to the public. Her idea was born.
In October of 1989, just nine months after her idea was born, Nancy purchased an old panel van and moved furniture into her original space on Bell Road in Phoenix. FURNITURE AFFAIR, the model home furniture outlet was open for business.
From day one people got it. They loved the designer furniture at the discounted prices and the business thrived. Today Furniture Affair has moved into a 22,000 square foot space and is the number one re-seller of model home furniture in the Valley. And to think it all began on a farm in the Midwest.
In 2002, The Business Journal in Phoenix ranked Furniture Affair Inc. one of The Top 50 Women-Owned Businesses in the Valley.
Ms. Rhodes contributes to many charities locally and nationally including: The Red Cross, St. Vincent De Paul, New York City Firefighters Fund, Sunnyslope School of Arts Program, numerous Animal Benefit Clubs, and many others.
Nancy is currently an active member in The Executive Committee (TEC), National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Women Presidents Organization (WPO), Women In The Home Furnishings Industry Today (WITHIT), Home Builders Association (HBACA), and Americn Society of Interior Designers (ASID).
